in Murdoch's book ,'a study of the Eskimo Bows in the U.S. national museum' he says besides spruce ,some used cedar and further north driftwood ,barrel staves or antler. The splices were mortices...

Thimo, I'd say that pine would be a good bit weaker than spruce. Spruce is supposed to be one of the strongest woods for its weight, they logged many of the old-growth red spruce from the mountains...
